Jack Skellington cake

August 11, 2007

I gave myself a cake (and everything else!) moratorium until after the costume was done, but this one was pretty quick and easy, and the birthday gal is a fun new coworker who likes The Nightmare Before Christmas. Besides, doing something besides sewing on gold trim was refreshing. Maybe that means I should call a moratorium on crafty moratoriums!

I also took the opportunity to conduct a little experiment. Using butter makes white buttercream slightly yellow. I’d heard that adding just a hint of lavender dye to it would bring it back to white. This makes sense if you think about the color wheel, but logic suggests that adding purple to white frosting should make purple frosting. But indeed, it does work! I probably could have gone even more white, but I was afraid, since at some point it would have to start turning purple, and I didn’t want Jack to look like he’d been dipped in gentian violet!
